Volunteering
To get the best experience here then please read all the info below.
WHAT: For potential volunteers, our standard arrangement is very similar to the WWOOF help exchange. We offer you meals and accommodation in return for 6 hours of work daily.
There is a variety of work to be done here between building, gardening, landscaping, and general homesteading activities. Please inform us of your expectations and if something interests you in particular then please tell us. Of course there will always be some things that have to be done at a certain time that can't change but if there is a possibility to shift things around then we'd like to help you learn what you like. And you can learn by helping us with our Earthship, permaculture, off-grid and alternative living in general. Pick our brains and find out about the REALITY of what this experience is really like and if it’s for you if you wish to embark on it someday.
WHEN: We welcome volunteers through the season - April to October. Longer term (ie. one month preferred).
Our daily flow is:
8-9am: Breakfast
9am-12noon: Morning Work
12noon-1pm: Lunch
1pm-4pm: Afternoon Work
4pm-6pm: Free time (possibly some meal time prep)
6pm-onwards: Dinner, dishes, freetime, bonfire etc.
FOOD and ACCOMMODATION: All meals will be provided and some snacks. At the moment we cannot cater to a wide range of dietary requirements. Meals will mostly be vegetarian. Please bring your own meats and/or alternatives and additions if you wish. We have a simple camping cooking stove and likely a fire going in the evenings for grilling.
There is camping available on-site. If you prefer to stay at a local B&B or motel in Bancroft, we recommend www.dragonflybnb.com and www.teddybearbandb.com. We are completely off-grid. We have a small solar system and collect water from our dug well. There will be enough water here for drinking, cooking and washing up. You may use our outdoor bucket shower but there is also a local campground which offers shower facilities for about $2.
TO BRING:
- tent, sleeping bag, and flashlight (if camping)
- working clothes and shoes that will most likely get dirty (we have a lot of sand here. you have been warned)
- swimming gear to take a dip after a good productive day
- bottle for drinking water
*Check the forecast beforehand to come prepared (ie. extra blankets for cold nights, hat for sun protection etc.)
EXTRA INFO: Turn this opportunity into a ‘voluntourism’ experience. Come to enjoy nature and the surrounding area. There's plenty to do for recreation. Hiking on the trail that borders our property, swimming at a selection of lakes in the area, fishing, cycling and you'd be welcome to borrow our canoe if interested. The landscape at our place varies between mixedwood forest, an old pine plantation and cleared fields full of wildflowers, so you may just want to spend your time on the land exploring and relaxing.
