The Story Behind the Fire Truck Kit
We are a couple with two young girls. We have taken the leap and quit our conventional jobs to pursue a healthy holistic lifestyle that incorporates organic gardening, ecological building and self-sufficiency. We knew that to do this we would have to create multiple income streams in order to support ourselves and our dream. Life is challenging when you're busy creating all the infrastructure on a property necessary to be comfortable, year round, in the occasionally unforgiving winters, all while also keeping the family a float on top of regular living demands! In addition to that, it is also our mission to be as waste-free, chemical-free, organic, low-impact, and local as possible. Every project we embark on, on this property has all these intentions in place, everytime. We have saved countless items from land-fill. Nearly all our family's needs are fulfilled by thrifted, second-hand goods. We find our housewares, building supplies and materials all on second-hand selling platforms. We scrounge materials from curbs and accept offerings from friends and family that no longer have uses for items. This is one way we reduce a LOT of our family's expenses. The other way we keep spending to a minimum is by living a minimalist lifestyle with very little frills. We find our frills on the land daily. The innumerable gifts we are blessed with just by enjoying nature's extraordinary simplicities feeds us more then we could ever imagine. Our dream is moving slowly but surely and we are on our way to creating a space for people to learn and replicate this alternative lifestyle and most importantly to embrace and celebrate nature as our greatest teacher and provider. We must understand her to protect her and it is our life's mission to help people to educate them and guide them. To appreciate the beauty and adore the simplicity. As a family that is building EVERYTHING ourselves from the ground up to create an offgrid homestead, there are many outbuildings that get produced which unfortunately (no matter how hard we design the building with as little waste as possible!) there are always off-cuts that we are left with. This year, as a birthday gift for our friend's little boy, we decided to build him a fire truck with some of these off-cuts. We then decorated it with bits and bobs such as washers, pipes, cords and bars left over from mini plumbing, electrical and carpentry jobs. It was a success and an enjoyable process where the whole family got involved. Dad cut the assembly pieces accordingly, kids and mom painted and decorated, and then Dad assembled everything together.
In the spirit of reducing waste and the on-coming Christmas season, we have decided to put together a number of kits to offer to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles - whomever has the great fortune of knowing a young little boy or girl that would enjoy the gift of a solid, sturdy Fire Truck that they can even paint and decorate themselves! We encourage parents to guide the child in painting and decorating their very own Fire Truck with as many or few details as they wish.
